LOCAL TRACKS BACK TO NORMAL AFTER LAST WEEK'S SPECIALS

After some big specials last weekend, area auto racing will be returning to regular schedules.

The Broad/Elm General Tire Stock Car Series will find the Modifieds, Super Stocks and Street Stocks competing at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lancaster National Speedway on Universal Joint Sales/National Auto Supply Night.

Lancaster will host the International Supermodified Association, plus the Empire Sweepstakes for the Modifieds, July 3. Rich Food Products will see the NHRA Broad Elm/General Tire Drag Racing Series get the green light Friday at Lancaster Dragway, with time trials at 6 p.m. and elimination racing at 8. Several first-time winners have appeared in all of the track's drag classes.

Holland International Speedway will host the NASCAR Winston Racing Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Motorcraft Auto Parts Night.

The NASCAR Late Model Pro-Stocks point standing is very tight, with veteran Art Clark leading Sonny Wittmeyer, another long-time Holland campaigner, 92-90. Rick Wylie is third with 88.

John Barber leads Don Wylie, 144-122, in NASCAR six-cylinder Modified points, while Joe Barber tops the NASCAR Chargers with 140 points. Jeff Evans and Mike Wiedeman are tied for second with 84 each.

Jim Krawczyk, 144, and Larry Petri, 108, are 1-2 in Challengers and Fred Miller, 98, and Bob Kmitch, 88, are the top two in Figure-Eight.

Also at Holland Saturday, one of the NASCAR Winston Cup stock cars driven by actor Tom Cruise in the forthcoming movie, "Days Of Thunder," will be on display. The track will give away a poster, shirt and hat autographed by Cruise.

Monroe Shocks will be the sponsor when the DIRT Modifieds, DIRT Sportsmen and Pro-Stocks kick into gear at 8 p.m. Friday at Ransomville Speedway. Big-block (467 cubic inch) DIRT Modified racing will return July 5 with the annual Zerex Antifreeze Summer Nationals. Ransomville now races DIRT 358 cubic-inch Modifieds weekly.

Because of Rob Ledingham's May 28 DIRT Sportsman win at Ransomville, DIRT headquarters has invited him to represent the Niagara County oval in the DIRT Sportsman Invitational, scheduled July 3 at the one-mile New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Mike Granton has received the same invitation as a result of a victory he had May 21 at Merrittville Speedway.

A demolition derby has been added to the DIRT Modified, DIRT Sportsman and Pro-Stock action at 8 p.m. Saturday at Merrittville.

Street Stocks will be featured in a 7:30 p.m. Saturday qualifier at Perry Speedway, the winner getting a spot in Freedom Speedway's $1,000-to-win Western New York Shootout Aug. 5. Sportsmen, Cheap Stocks and Street Stocks will race at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Genesee Fair Speedway on Country Motors Night.

Supermodifieds return to Oswego Speedway for the Action Laser Therapy Clinics 45 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Oswego has scheduled a rate Sunday date (July 1) for the Supermodified and Empire Sweepstakes Modified points special.

NASCAR Late Model Pro-Stocks and Super Stocks perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Spencer Speedway.

Randy Slack, son of Cayuga Speedway promoters Bob and Leone Slack, won both Great American Truck Racing (GATR) 75-lap segments of the Big Rig 150 last Sunday at Cayuga.

Ken Koczur (Street Machine) and Steve Swiatowy (Street Rod) won the Oddy Shootout drag special last Tuesday at Lancaster Dragway. Lou Salemi had top speed and elapsed time of the evening, while Pete Schaefer took best reaction time. The next Oddy Shootout drags at Lancaster are July 10.

Budweiser-Castrol Can-Am Midgets are at Toronto's Exhibition Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. m. George Gilbert won last Sunday.

Grand Island's Paul Gast won the NHRA Spring Nationals Pro-Stock Bike Class last weekend at Columbus, Ohio, making him the first area drag bike racer to win an NHRA national event. The High Stakes Bracket Series plus Jetcars, Alcohol Dragsters, Pro-Stocks and Funny Cars, will invade Dragway Park Cayuga at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

NAPA Auto Stores will present NAPA Night At The Races at Lancaster Speedway (July 6-7), Perry Speedway (July 7) and Holland International (July 14).

The first 250 adults through the gates will receive free NAPA gold hats and the first 250 children Team Valvoline "Racing Against Drugs" posters. Discount tickets priced at $2 for each program are available at participating NAPA stores.
