As a taxpayer and a parent who has a daughter in the Buffalo public schools, I support the salary goals of the city teachers. Teachers are the heart of a school system, and they deserve decent salaries and benefits. I am willing to pay the extra cost because it is an investment in the future of Buffalo: our children.
I do not want to pay for Pilot Field and Memorial Auditorium improvements when our schools are underfunded. Most of all, I do not want to pay for the corruption that I see in city government.
We moved to Buffalo four years ago in part because of its excellent school system. Over these past four years, I have become increasingly discouraged when I see the school board, the mayor and the City Council undermining the quality of the school system by strangling it for the funds it needs to operate. If they continue to do so, they will destroy a fine school system.
If the school system is destroyed, it also will hurt Buffalo. Businesses do not want to relocate in a town with a poor school system.
