CHASE CHAIRMAN STEPPING DOWN

Chase Manhattan Corp. said Wednesday its chairman would step down at the end of October, accelerating a management shake-up expected to lead to cutbacks in the banking company's corporate finance area.

The bank holding company said its current president, Thomas G. Labrecque, 51, would replace Willard C. Butcher, 63, as chairman and chief executive officer effective Oct. 31.
