ROTARY LAUNCHES EFFORT FOR DOWNTOWN ICE RINK

A campaign to put the "jewel in the crown" of Buffalo's downtown revival -- an ice rink -- was launched Tuesday by the Rotary Club of Buffalo.

The club contributed $100,000 from the Buffalo Rotary Foundation and pledged to raise an additional $400,000 or more for the rink, which will be 30 percent larger than New York City's Rockefeller Center rink.

Rotary Rink will be in Fountain Plaza, at Main and Chippewa streets. The site is near Norstar Bank headquarters, and twin office buildings are being constructed. The rink will serve as a reflecting pool in warmer months. It is scheduled to debut this winter. Laurence K. Rubin, the city's commissioner of Community Development, said a combination of private and federal funds, and city bonding will finance the $4.5 million project.
