Soviet Olympic pairs figure skating champions Oleg and Ludmila Protopopov will conduct a seminar this weekend for the Skating Club of Western New York at the Holiday Twin Rinks, 3465 Broadway, Cheektowaga. Seminar times for Saturday are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and for Sunday 9 a.m.-noon.

The four-time world and European champions will give instruction in jumps, spins, footwork and choreography. Private lessons may be scheduled. For information, call Mrs. Carol Adler at 689-7411.
A large group of local qualifiers will compete, starting Friday through July 1, in four age groups at the National Synchronized Swimming Championships in St. Louis.

In 11-12, competing Saturday through Monday, are Michelle Bilkey of the Town of Tonawanda Aquettes and Sarah Baker of the Buffalo Swimkins in solo, Bilkey and Vickie Lewandowski and Karen Cerveny and Sara Kaprove of the Swimkins in duet, and Cerveny, Kaprove and Baker, and Jennifer Blumhagen, Erika Gellin and Michelle Mitchell of the Aquettes in trio, plus the Aquette A and B teams and the Swimkins team.

In 13-14, competing Monday through June 27, are Diana Fischler, Karen Polizzi and Misty Ford of the Aquettes in solo; Ford and Shannon McCartney of the Aquettes, Karin and Kristin Graham of the Aquettes, and Jodi Wiegand and Rachel Kozower of the Swimkins in duet; and Fischler and the Grahams of the Aquettes and Wiegand, Amy Markezich and Jayme Perrelo plus Lura Hess, Faye Lucarelli and Betsy McCall of the Swimkins in trio. Both clubs also have teams entered.

In 15-16, swimming June 28-July 1, are Amy Surra, Mary Szwejbka and Carmita Velasco of the Aquettes in solo; Kristina Moore and Szwejbka and Tracie Lopardi and Julie Bagley of the Aquettes and Katie McCall and Markezich of the Swimkins in duet; and Bagley, Sue Hilbert and Lopardi of the Aquettes, Kolleen Yuhnke, McCall and Julie Menchetti plus Emily Wiechec, Kristen Barr and Lisa Eberhardt of the Swimkins in trio.

In 17-18, swimming June 28-July 1, are Jean Hilbert and Elizabeth Starr of the Aquettes in solo; Hilbert and Surra, and Yuhnke and Shannon Cerveny of the Swimkins in duet; Yuhnke, Cerveny and Kozower and Moore, Starr and Velasco in trio.

The Aquettes and Swimkins also each have a team in 15-18 competition.

After the meet, Surra and Jean Hilbert will be joined by former Aquette Patti Wiegand at the Olympic Sports Festival in Minneapolis, Minn., July 1-9.
Buffalo lost to Rochester, 8-7, then defeated Syracuse, 12-3, to finish third in the annual four-team Marsh Cup tennis tournament on the winners' home courts recently. Rochester defeated Toronto for the title.

Winning matches for Buffalo against Rochester were Mike Gibbs and Todd Miller in singles, Dave Scamurra in 35 singles, Phil Celniker in 45 singles, Jack Sunderland and Art Richtand in 55 doubles, Chris Cirrito in singles and Cirrito and Debbie Miller in doubles.

Neil Simon of Amherst defeated Eric Fero of New York, 6-3, 6-2, in the finals of the New York State Hardcourt Tennis Championships in Utica. The former Amherst High star will attend Tulane University this fall on a tennis scholarship.

Currently ranked ninth in the East for players 18 and under, Simon finished third this season in the Section VI scholastic championships.

Aaron Miller of West Seneca and Jason Zent of Cheektowaga were selected recently to compete for USA Hockey berths at the U.S. Olympic Festival July 5-15 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Miller is a 1989 graduate of St. Francis of Athol Springs and will enter his sophomore year at University of Vermont. He was selected to the all-rookie team of the ECAC last April. He is a 1989 fifth-round draft choice of the New York Rangers.

Zent, who was drafted in '89 by the New York Islanders in the third round, will enter University of Wisconsin as a freshman in August.

Both have full scholarships.
