Services for Willard C. Hergert, 74, a retired lieutenant for the Buffalo Fire Department, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Trinity United Methodist Church, 711 Niagara Falls Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
Hergert, 74, a former resident of the Town of Tonawanda, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 1990) in Grand Island Manor after a long illness.
Born in Buffalo, Hergert joined the Fire Department in 1944 and later earned the O'Conner Bronze Medal for rescuing two women from a burning house. He retired in 1977 after 33 years of service.
An avid woodcarver, he gained first-place honors in that specialty at the Erie County Fair during the 1960s.
He was a member of the Buffalo Fire Department Retirees Club; Firefighters Local 282; Transportation Lodge, F & AM; the Police and Fire Square Club of Buffalo, and the Grand Island Masonic Golfers Association.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Gayle Lovelace Hergert; two sons, Dennis W. of Sherman, Conn., and Mark W. of Redwood City, Calif.; a sister, June Young of the Town of Tonawanda, and a grandchild.
