Why the hurry to fill former Comptroller Robert Whelan's position? The deputy comptroller could easily continue in that position until the November election.
Councilman Fahey's effort to change laws, just to enable him and a few other councilmen to appoint someone of their own choice, seems at the least to be a serious conflict of interest if not also a political power grab. An appointed comptroller would almost certainly be greatly indebted to those who appointed him and not the voters of this city.
Fahey should allow the people of Buffalo to scrutinize the candidates and their qualifications for this very sensitive office.
