ALEXANDER BOARD SEEKS FEWER SPORTS TEAMS

Trojans, indeed, constitutes an apt name for the athletes of Alexander Central School.

There's no shortage of three-sport athletes who carry Alexander's green and white into interscholastic competition. Alexander's 16 teams throughout the school year draw players from a high school enrollment of 202.

"We have the same number of inter-scholastic teams this year that we had 10 years ago when the high school enrollment was 405," said Superintendent Nelson Wellspeak. So Wellspeak and the School Board are now looking to reduce the number of Alexander teams.

In the autumn months, Alexander fields football, girls and boys cross-country, volleyball, soccer and cheerleading teams. The competing winter season teams are girls and boys basketball, coed swimming, coed track, wrestling and cheerleading. The spring teams are boys baseball, girls softball, track and tennis, both coed unless the competition has separate squads.

"Our teams excel in track and cross-country," he
observed.
