William D. McCarthy, 73, a retired Internal Revenue Service official, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 1990) in his East Amherst home after a long illness.
McCarthy retired in 1979 after 28 years of service with the IRS in Buffalo. Beginning as an agent, he became a conferee in the Conference Division and an appellate conferee in the Appeal Division.
During World War II, he served in the Pacific with the Army, attaining the rank of staff sergeant.
McCarthy was an avid golfer from the age of 9.
Survivors include his wife, the former Patricia Kennedy; four sons, Dennis P. of San Diego, Calif., Timothy V. of East Amherst, Daniel T. of Amherst and William P. of San Diego; two daughters, Mary P. Griffin of Morris Plains, N.J., and Mary Sharon McCarthy of East Amherst; four brothers, Monsignor James T. of Ellicottville, the Rev. John P. of Limestone, Paul V. of Williamsville and Gerald S.; a sister, Geraldine Lynch, and 10 grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 100 St. Gregory Court, Amherst. Prayers will be said at 10:15 in the Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
