Efforts to change 11 Western New York stores that were known as Sibley's into Kaufmann's, an upscale department store headquartered in Pittsburgh, are in progress. However, the stage of the transition is as yet unknown.
The May Co. of St. Louis, owner of both store chains, earlier this month announced that the two chains would be merged. All changes down to the name on the storefronts should be completed by April 1, said James Abrams, May Co. spokesman.
Although Sibley's is considered by some to have lower quality merchandise than its new namesake, Abrams said the marketing mix of the two will not be noticeably different because both stores carry many of the same brands.
Each of the new Kaufmann's stores in Western New York will be able to choose between an upscale and a mid-range format depending on the location and the clientele, Abrams said.
