W. SENECA PUPIL'S INVENTION WINS STATE COMPETITION

Kevin Shaw, a sixth-grade pupil at West Seneca's Clinton Elementary School, has won a statewide competition for devising a model of a life-saving ladder that can be folded up when not in use.

His invention was deemed the best sixth-grade entry in the state by the United States Patent Model Foundation of Washington, D.C., which administers the "Invent America!" competition. Kevin, 12, will be presented an award from the Pepsi-Cola Co., which co-sponsors the competition, at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the school.

Kevin designed the model in Clinton's academically talented program after hearing a news report of children dying in a fire after being trapped in second-story bedrooms.
