A City of Tonawanda woman suffered multiple injuries in a collision with a tractor-trailer about 8 a.m. today on Niagara Falls Boulevard near the Sabreland ice rink, police said.
Janet Furman, 43, of 278 Adams St. was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo and was reported in stable condition.
Deputy Kevin Mack of the Niagara County Sheriff's Department said the tractor-trailer, belonging to M.L. Young Motor Express, was operated by Michael McKenna, 27, of 38 Fifth Ave., North Tonawanda. Mack said the vehicle skidded on ice and struck another car, operated by Jacques Robitaille, 35, of 325 Fairways Boulevard, Amherst, traveling in the same direction, and then hit the southbound Furman vehicle head-on.
Volunteers from the Adams Fire Company used hydraulic tools to remove the woman. Deputies closed a section of the boulevard from Ruie Road to Nash Road for 90 minutes.
Authorities said 200 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the truck, with about 15 to 20 gallons going into nearby Sawyer Creek.
The hazardous-materials squad of Niagara County and the state Department of Environmental Conservation were summoned to the scene.
Mack said charges are pending.
