THREE ARE INJURED IN ELLINGTON CRASH

Three persons were injured when a pickup truck ran out of control and struck a tree about 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the square of the Village of Ellington.

State police based at Falconer said Julie Merrill, 17, of Prendergast Avenue, Jamestown, lost control of her pickup on County Road 66, shearing off a utility police, striking a playground swing set and finally hitting the a tree.

Ms. Merrill suffered a hip injury. Two other passengers, Ricky Pearson, 16, of Buffalo Street, Jamestown, and Timothy Caldwell, 24, of Gerry, the owner of the truck, suffered head injuries. All three were treated in WCA Hospital, Jamestown, then released.

Police said witnesses told them several children saw the pickup coming and scattered from the swing set just before the pickup hit it.

Ms. Merrill was charged with speeding, failure to keep right, driving without a seat belt and driving a vehicle with no seat belts installed.

The two passengers were also charged with not wearing seat belts.
