YOUTH HELD IN SYRACUSE SLAYING

Syracuse police Saturday were investigating the shooting death of a 14-year-old junior high school student who was killed by another teen-ager on a busy street corner.

Roger Filds was shot once in chest late Friday in front of the Onondaga County courthouse.

He died a short time later at University Hospital in Syracuse, police said.

Aaron Dempsey, 18, of Rochester was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, according to Syracuse Police Sgt. Clinton Gary. Dempsey is being held in the city jail, pending arraignment.

A small-caliber handgun believed to be the murder weapon was recovered by police, who do not yet have a motive for the shooting. They said an ongoing argument that started last fall may have been a contributing factor.

Filds was a student at Grant Junior High School in Syracuse.
