Personally, I feel revamping the 50-year-old Memorial Auditorium would be akin to putting a Band-Aid on a 20-year-old wound. Even the Boston Bruins, who are beating the Sabres at this too, have enough sense to build a new facility.
A lot of the Sabres players' talent is being wasted due to the inadequacy of the ice condition and size. It seems the organization drafts, scouts and trades for players who are fast skaters, efficient puck-handlers and effective goal-scorers. But once these players' skates hit the Aud ice, a transformation takes place. Suddenly they go from the players they were to players who dump the puck in and chase, bang in the corners and grind it out. They are being forced to play and practice to the conditions of the Aud. A Gretzky-type of player would be ruined.
