Concerned about the growing threat of the zebra mussel, Assemblyman Frances Pordum, D-Blasdell, said Saturday he would meet with the Department of Environmental Conservation on Monday to begin formulating a plan of attack.

"We want to find a way to combat this before it becomes a crisis situation," Pordum said.

The zebra mussel, a small Eastern European shellfish that has been introduced to Lake Erie water by ocean-going ships, has been spreading like wildfire and clogging water intakes throughout the lake. It has been found in municipal water intakes and power plants in Dunkirk, at the Erie County Water Authority intakes and intakes on the Canadian shore.
