MARYVALE TURNS BACK SPRINGVILLE

John Hufford scored 20 points and point guard Dave Smith added 16 Friday as Maryvale upset visiting Springville, 49-40, in a Division III game of the Erie County Interscholastic Conference.

Springville (11-3 overall, 4-3 in league) is the No. 7 small school in The News Poll. Maryvale is 7-8, 4-4. The Flyers started the season 1-5, but won their next four to pull even at 5-5. Since then, they had dropped three of four games.

Smith keyed the victory by adding 10 rebounds and six assists. Maryvale held a 24-17 halftime lead and handcuffed the Griffins the rest of the way. Jason Krezmien led Springville with 13 points.

In another Division III game, Dan Feeney had 18 points to lead four Lackawanna players in double figures as the Steelers (12-3, 7-1), eighth among large schools, ripped Iroquois, 79-53. Mike Donovan led Iroquois (2-13, 1-7) with 18.

Dave Ryan's 23 points and 12 rebounds boosted Williamsville South (6-8, 4-3) over Cheektowaga, 71-60. Freshman guard J.J. Siepierski added 15 points and eight assists for the Billies. Brian Riniolo led Cheektowaga (3-11, 1-6) with 19 points.

Niagara Frontier

No. 9 Niagara Falls (10-4, 5-1) got 19 points and 11 rebounds from Willie Cauley in a 62-55 win at Nichols. Fifth-ranked Nichols (10-3, 3-1), which saw an eight-game winning streak snapped, got 15 points from Luther Winfield.

No. 1 Grand Island (15-0) scored 60 first-half points in a 95-77 win over Kenmore East. Carlin Hartman had 29 points, Brendan Staub 23 and Henry Juliano contributed 20 points and 12 rebounds. Ken Warren scored 26 points and Gary Welgoss had 25 for East (7-8, 0-5).

Lockport (9-6, 3-2) beat Niagara-Wheatfield, 57-38, as Tony Maroney collected 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Glenn Lendel scored 17 points and North Tonawanda (7-6, 3-2) hit 20 of 27 free throws in a 62-55 win over Kenmore West (7-9, 3-3).

Lewiston-Porter (6-10, 2-4) got 23 points and 17 rebounds from Lou Thomas in a 78-53 rout of winless Tonawanda.

No. 2 St. Joe's (14-0, 6-0) blasted Turner/Carroll, 83-43, as Chris Sprigg scored 22 points and sophomore Eric Eberz totaled 20 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Damone James had 18 points for Turner/Carroll (4-6, 3-2).

Canisius (6-8, 4-3) overcame an 18-7 first-quarter deficit and rolled past O'Hara, 81-62. Dan Popadick led the Crusaders with 17 points, Joe Raccuia added 16 and Kevin Korn 15. O'Hara (4-10, 3-5) got 23 from Scott Kocsis.

Timon scored 19 of the game's first 21 points and blew out Niagara Catholic, 80-54. Peter Durant led the Tigers (6-7, 4-2) with 25 points and Steve Kull added 17.

ECIC I

Tom Brown and Mark Parise combined for 14 points in the third quarter as Frontier's 18-6 run keyed a 64-46 win at Lancaster. Sotir Tanevski led Frontier (8-5, 5-1) with 16 points. Ken Grzybowski paced Lancaster (4-9, 3-5) with 15.

Orchard Park (8-7, 5-3) grabbed a 28-9 halftime lead and ripped West Seneca West, 56-38, behind Jeff Balen's 20 points.

Ray Taylor's 20 points lifted Jamestown (11-4, 5-2) past West Seneca East, 67-46. Dave Piasecki had 20 for East (5-9, 1-6).

ECIC II

Depew used a 12-0 run in the fourth-quarter to break open a tight game and beat Williamsville East, 61-50. Tim Danner had 15 points for the Wildcats (10-5, 5-3). East (5-10, 1-7) got 16 from Jason Savoldi.

Bill Zoeller's 17 points and Joe Shadle's 14 points and 10 assists sent Hamburg (10-4, 6-2) past Lake Shore, 60-54. Matt Emerson led the Eagles (5-9, 3-5) with 15.

Jason Stang's 16 points and 17 rebounds sparked Williamsville North (7-7, 4-3) past Amherst, 58-51. Travis Smith led Amherst (6-10, 1-7) with 17.

ECIC IV

Shawn Surdej's two free throws with 19 seconds left gave John F. Kennedy (13-1, 6-0) a 46-45 win at Cleveland Hill. The Bears trailed, 32-20, at halftime. JFK, ninth among small schools, was led by Bill Rogowski's 12 points. The Golden Eagles (6-7, 3-2) got 17 from Craig Elis.

Joey Wright had 22 points and Jason Allen had 20 to lead East Aurora (6-8, 3-2) past Alden, 85-65. Jake Glauser netted 18 points for Alden (1-14, 1-5).

D.J. Nellis (25 points) and Jason Friol (22 points, 12 rebounds) powered Eden (5-10, 1-4) past Holland, 62-54. Sophomore Erik Koch meshed 20 points for Holland (6-7, 2-3).

CCIAC III

Center Ryan Clifford poured in 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as No. 8 Westfield (13-0, 7-1) beat visiting Sherman, 85-71, in a battle of unbeatens. Sherman, which got 29 points from Chris Crane, fell to 12-1, 6-1.

Niagara-Orleans

Starpoint (8-6, 7-1) upended Medina, 45-39, behind Nate Barry's 16 points and 10 rebounds and Brian Schreader's 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Brian Freer's 18 points led No. 10 Wilson (12-2, 7-1) over Roy-Hart, 87-71. Chad Wolter led Roy-Hart (3-10, 2-6) with 26.

Paul Perryman's 27 points sent Akron (9-5, 5-3) over Albion, 72-62.

Non-league

Fredonia (9-5) beat Riverside, 75-63, as Paul Mierzwa netted a game-high 22 points. Darren Walton and Willie Cornelius led the Frontiers (7-8) with 14 points apiece.

Sophomore Andrew Nguiamba had 27 points and 14 rebounds as Gow (7-2) beat Rochester North Star, 68-59.
