Greatest Hits and More (Atlantic 7-82061-2). Once upon a time, some hyperbolists called Atlantic Records "the house that Ruth built." Until the Drifters came along, Ruth Brown was the R & B diva who put the label on the map. She's still around and well, as John Waters' movie "Hairspray" let us know. This two-disc set is the essential Ruth Brown -- so much so that some very early things on it are being heard for the first time. It's on the second disc here that she really hits her stride. Her voice was never the barn shaker that Big Maybelle's or LaVerne Baker's was, but those who called her "Miss Rhythm" weren't kidding. Terrific vintage R & B and early rock. -- Jeff Simon
