A passenger on the Avianca airliner that crashed Thursday night was carrying extra baggage on his flight from Colombia -- four condoms filled with white powder that surgeons today discovered inside his stomach.
Though tests had not been done, authorities suspected that the condoms were filled with cocaine, a North Shore University Hospital official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Authorities noted that the flight from Bogota stopped in the drug-smuggling capital of Medellin before continuing on to New York.
The passenger was rushed into surgery for abdominal bleeding, and when doctors opened his abdomen, they found the condoms, a hospital source said.
The 30-year-old man, whose name was not given, was reported in critical condition.
