It began six years ago with a trial balloon. A group of Philharmonic musicians organized a concert in celebration of Mozart's birthday and, in the parlance of Madison Avenue, ran it up the flagpole to see who'd salute. Well, a surprising number of people snapped to attention, and the Mozart Birthday Celebration Concert became an annual event whose seventh installment will take place on Monday at 8 p.m. in the Lancaster Opera House. Two ensembles made up largely of Philharmonic members will perform. The Westwood String Quartet will be joined by clarinetist Diana Haskell in the Clarinet Quintet in A, K581. Westwood members are violinists Douglas Cone and Andrea Blanchard, violist Valerie Heywood-How and cellist Eva Leininger. Completing the program will be a performance of the Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-Flat, K452, by the ensemble calling itself the Lake Effect Winds. It is made up of Duane Saetveit, French horn, clarinetist Haskell, bassoonist Martha Malkiewicz, oboist Cheryl Bishkoff and pianist Debi Overton. A birthday party ambiance will prevail, with festive decorations, door prizes and what-all. -- Herman Trotter
