Geraldine Ferraro, Bella Abzug and Carol Bellamy, who as Democratic officeholders proved they could pull votes, Wednesday announced they will campaign to protect abortion rights by working for a Democratic majority in the State Senate.

"The women and men of this state have not known that the great majority, over 80 percent, of the Republican state senators have taken anti-family and anti-woman positions, where 85 percent of the Democratic state senators have taken a position that cares about women," said Ms. Bellamy, former president of the New York City Council. Republicans control the Senate 34 to 17; Democrats are the Assembly majority.

Ms. Ferraro said money for the effort may come from the Democratic organizations but also from fund-raising.
