Joseph M. Abate, a former commander of the State Police in Western New York, was promoted recently from staff inspector to deputy chief inspector by Superintendent Thomas A. Constantine.

In his new position, Abate will conduct internal audits of administrative and police operations, analyze police procedures, evaluate performance and carry out other managerial duties.

Abate, 55, a 27-year State Police veteran, is a lifelong resident of the Buffalo area. He served as commander of Troop A, which covers the eight counties of Western New York, from 1983 to 1985. Abate has received seven commendations from the State Police superintendent for outstanding service.
