MEETING SET ON DEVELOPING NEW SPORTS FACILITIES

A local state senator is inviting government, collegiate and professional sports representatives to a meeting March 2 to discuss a long-range planning group for new sports facilities in the Buffalo area.

"I just want to see this kind of effort get in gear," John B. Sheffer II said Tuesday. The Williamsville Republican is chairman of the Senate Committee on Tourism, Recreation and Sports Development.

Last week, Sheffer proposed the creation of a planning committee to coordinate and plan development of sports arenas.

"I think we have all been kind of stunned by the number and cost of stadium proposals over the last several months," Sheffer said. At least 10 major projects, from new facilities for the 1993 World University Games to new venues for the Bills and Sabres, have been proposed.

Sheffer said he is inviting participations from each of the area's professional sports teams; local, county, state and federal officials; area colleges and universities; regional and state planning officials; labor unions, and the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce.
