FORD, MAZDA SET EUROPEAN VENTURE

Mazda Motor Co. and Ford Motor Co. plan a joint venture to produce compact cars in Europe based on existing Mazda models, a Mazda official said.

Japan's fourth-largest automaker and its U.S. partner expect to produce the cars in Saarlouis in southwestern West Germany, said a Mazda official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He declined to say whether the venture would build a new factory or use an existing Ford plant.
