The third safe burglary in the last three weeks has posed a new problem for city police, Detective Lt. Russell Cerminara said Monday.
A panel was kicked in Monday, and thieves are believed to have crawled in through the bottom of a steel door at the Gateway Laundromat, 1519 18th St., where the safe was smashed open and $1,250 removed. Detectives James Lincoln and Celestine Jackson said another $40 was taken from the office area earlier Monday.
Police are still investigating a recent safe-cracking at the Pine Discount Beverage and Dairy, 2702 Pine Ave., and the removal of a safe from Arby's at 2001 Main St. The loss was estimated at about $2,000 at each location.
