Burgard senior Felice Mann set a Western New York girls basketball record Monday with 61 points in an 86-50 Canisius Cup win over Riverside.
The 5-foot-9 guard hit 27 of 33 shots from the field, including three three-pointers, to break the record of 57 established in 1976-77 by LaSalle's Debbie Williams and equaled a year later by Grover's Valerie Mosley.
Mann, averaging over 45 points per game, added 14 rebounds, seven assists and four steals as the Bulldogs moved to 9-2 overall and 8-1 in league. She scored 56 -- one shy of the record -- on Jan. 5 in an 81-71 win over Traditional.
"Everybody was conscious of it this time," said Burgard coach Ron Pugh, who was unaware of Williams' and Mosley's totals that day. "Even the referees said 'don't take her out' until she broke it."
Mann scored her 58th and 59th points on a jumper with about 2 1/2 minutes to play and became one of only four girls in state history to crack 60 with a field goal a few seconds later.
