A Mass of Christian Burial for John E. Courtney Jr., a Buffalo funeral director, will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Teresa's Catholic Church, 1974 Seneca St. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
Courtney, 48, died Sunday (Jan. 21, 1990) in the Erie County Medical Center after a lengthy battle with diabetes.
A South Buffalo native, he attended Timon High School, where he played football, and Villanova University. He received his professional training and certification from the Simmons School in Syracuse.
Courtney joined his father's business, Courtney's Funeral Home, 1869 Seneca St., in the 1960s. He closed the funeral home and retired in 1982 because he had lost his sight. He later worked at the Blind Association of Western New York.
An avid sailor, Courtney sailed his boat into New York Harbor for the unveiling of the refurbished Statue of Liberty in 1986.
Courtney also served in the U.S. Marine Reserves.
He was a member of the Erie-Niagara Funeral Directors Association and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include three sons, John E. III, David and Gregory; two daughters, Susan and Mary Elizabeth of California; his mother, Elizabeth Courtney; two sisters, Carol Cooney and Maureen Irvin, and two grandchildren.
