Corning Inc. Monday reported record profits in 1989.

Corning ended the year with $261 million in net income, or $2.80 a share, compared with last year's record mark of $210.7 million, or $2.34 a share.

The company also reported that in the fourth quarter ending Dec. 31, its income was $73.3 million, or 77 cents a share, compared with $51.6 million, or 58 cents a share, for the corresponding quarter in 1988.

Total 1989 sales for Corning were $2.4 billion, a 15 percent increase over 1988. Fourth quarter sales were $611 million, up 13 percent.
