I recently attended the Erie County Legislature's Transportation Committee meeting and wish to commend the legislators.
We have all, at one time or another, taken a shot at these people and from what I heard, they really feel it. If only more of the public could have been there, they would have seen how sincerely concerned and dedicated they are to resolving the problem of funding the NFTA.
They are up against some pretty stiff odds. As one stated, no matter what sector the committee turns to, no one wants to be pinpointed to finance the NFTA, yet it is a very necessary part of the county's economy.
As a regional representative of a health care agency, not only do I realize that 80 percent of our workers rely on public transportation, as one legislator stated, but in direct correlation, 80 percent of our patients who rely on us for all levels of health care are involved. They are the ones who will immediately suffer. Their safety and welfare are our main concern, and a lack of transportation for their aides and nurses could cause a tragedy.
So instead of knocking what the legislators do, let's give them support and suggestions to help them find a permanent solution to funding the NFTA. It's a monumental task.
