CAT PLAYING WITH MATCHES IS BLAMED FOR HOUSE FIRE

A cat playing with matches was blamed for a fire Saturday that left Bob and Janet Howland homeless in this Livingston County town.

Lima Fire Chief Elwood Simmons said four cats and a dog were killed but no people were at home when the fire started.

Investigators concluded that a cat was playing with a box of wooden matches and somehow ignited one, which set a couch on fire, Simmons said. The cat had burn marks on its face, and splintered matches were found in the area where the fire started.
