ARSON ATTEMPT FAILS AT FIRE HALL IN NORTH EVANS

An arsonist early Sunday attempted to burn the North Evans Fire Hall at Versailles Plank and South Creek roads in the Town of Evans, a landmark dating back more than 100 years, town police reported.

The attempt was foiled when two members of the fire company were passing the large frame structure and saw a glow inside, police said. They sounded the alarm at 6:22 a.m., and firefighters from four companies responded.

Town detectives are investigating the possibility that the fire may have been set by someone familiar with the company. The building was locked, police said, and there was no evidence of a break-in.

Chief Nicholas Mecca of the North Evans Fire District said the damage from the fire was not heavy, but there was extensive smoke damage to the interior. Police said the building was renovated last year.
