The duo of Edward Marlette Jr. and his guest, former area resident Gary Conover, will try for their fifth title as long-time partners in the 68th annual Country Club of Buffalo Memorial Day Invitational today.

In the title match, Marlette and Conover, a district attorney in Talladega, Ala., will pair against Paul Griffin and guest Robert Bishop of Latrobe, Pa. Tee-off is 12:30 p.m. for the championship in the oldest four-day invitational in the country.

In Saturday's semifinals, Marlette and Conover defeated Michael Keller and his guest, Richard Reece of Teton Lakes CC in Rexburg, Idaho, 2 up, while Griffin and Bishop defeated Gregory Woeppel and John Ginnetti of Crag Burn, 1 up.

Jordan enters Keith's Classic

Eden native Patty Jordan will be among the celebrities playing in the second annual Keith's Classic Memorial Pro-Am Tournament, to be held June 12 at River Oaks.

The LPGA touring professional will be joined by PGA Tour member Ken Green, along with several Buffalo Bills and Sabres. The tournament benefits the Association for Research of Childhood Cancer. Cost of the event is $100. Call 773-9037.

Local tournament calendar

The local qualifying event for the 15th annual Michelin National Long Driving Championship will be held from noon to 4 p.m. June 4 at Glen Oak.

The event is open to amateurs and professionals. Contestants register the day of the event and play a $5 entry fee for every three balls. All proceeds benefit the PGA of America's Junior Golf Foundation.

Local qualifiers advance to one of 15 district sites in July. Twenty-five district qualifiers make the national finals Nov. 4-5 in the Bahamas. Last year's winner, Jim Maynord of Raleigh, N.C., won the $15,000 first prize with a drive of 334 yards in the final.

The third annual Joe DeSa Memorial tournament will be held June 27 at Glen Oak. Entry fee is $125 and proceeds benefit the Joe DeSa Scholarship Fund and Western New York United Against Drugs and Alcohol. For details, call Frank "Fremo" Vallone at 846-2036.

A tournament to benefit the Girl Scout Council of Buffalo and Erie County will be held June 26 at Orchard Park CC. Fee is $125. Call Mary Miranda at 873-6400.

The fifth annual Bill Schwartzman Memorial Heart Classic will be held June 26 at the Lancaster Country Club. The event benefits the American Heart Association. Call 853-5356 or 896-0127.

The fourth annual Erie Community College Tournament will be held June 14 at South Shore CC. Cost for the event, which benefits the Erie CC hockey team, is $37.
