A female tourist in New York was raped Friday in Central Park minutes after arriving in the city and just hours after 1,000 people had gathered in the park to protest last month's rape of a female jogger there.

Police said a 27-year-old tourist, who had just arrived on a bus from North Carolina, was forced at gunpoint into the park at 4 a.m. after walking up from the bus terminal to nearby Columbus Circle to meet a friend.

Police said a 32-year-old man was arrested and charged with rape after the woman reported the attack.

The assault came just hours after 1,000 people gathered in the park Thursday night to protest the April 19 gang rape of a jogger by five teen-agers out on what they described as a "wilding" spree, taking the word "wilding" from a popular song.
