Ecology & Environment of Lancaster has been awarded a $2.4 million contract to investigate 17 toxic waste sites in the Western New York area for the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

E&E will start work immediately on a program to determine if the sites pose a significant threat to health or the environment, according to state Environmental Commissioner Thomas C. Jorling.

DEC identified these sites in Erie and Niagara counties that will be scrutinized:

Erie: LaSalle Reservoir and the Diarsenol Co. site in Kingsley Park, Kingsley Street, both in Buffalo; Ed Ball Sanitation and the Evans Town Landfill, both in Evans; Town of Marilla Landfill, Marilla; Tonawanda Landfill, Tonawanda.

Niagara: 97th Street Methodist Church adjacent to Love Canal, Niagara Falls.

The other sites are in DEC's Rochester-area region.
