Nearby Lime Lake Thursday night provided a convenient water source for the 40 volunteer firefighters who quickly brought under control flames that threatened a vacant business structure on Route 16, just north of here.
Machias Fire Chief Charles Phetteplace said that an engineer relay was set up to pump water from the lake, a few hundred feet behind the structure that formerly was occupied by the J & S Sales and Service Co.
Fire damage estimated at $5,000 was confined to a garage area at the north end of the building, and an overhead apartment sustained smoke damage.
A mutual-aid crew from Franklinville also answered the 8 p.m. alarm. Phetteplace said that the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
