Either Jamestown or West Seneca West will be North Tonawanda's first foe as the Lady Lumberjacks attempt to become the first Western New York team to win consecutive state softball championships.
That was one of the many matchups unveiled for this year's Section VI playoff pairings, announced Tuesday night by sectional chairman Dave Polechetti of Fredonia. Pairings for the Section VI baseball tournament are scheduled to be announced late tonight.
North Tonawanda, which finished with an 8-1 Niagara Frontier League record and is seeded third in Class A, will meet the survivor of Friday's Red Raiders-Indians prequarterfinal Tuesday. Jamestown is the No. 11 seed, while West Seneca West is No. 6. From there, a semifinal against Lake Shore, Kenmore West or Hutch-Tech is in the offing.
Lurking in the other half of the bracket is top-seeded Sweet Home, the No. 1 large school in the latest Western New York Coaches Poll.
North Tonawanda, co-holder of the No. 4 ranking along with Kenmore West, has won six consecutive Section VI Class A titles. Sweet Home has not taken the championship since 1979.
All teams with a league record of at least .500 qualified for the sectionals. Teams then were seeded by Section VI's point formula, which awards and subtracts points based on the results of a game, a team's enrollment classification and the class of the opponent.
Also earning top seeds were two-time defending sectional champion Eden (Class B), Falconer (Class C) and Panama (D). Wilson, the three-time defending Class C title-holder, is seeded second, while 1988 champion Franklinville is third in Class D.
Finals in all four classes are scheduled June 3 at Eden Legion Field. Winners advance to meet teams from Section IV (Binghamton area) in the Far West Regionals at Irondequoit's McAvoy Park June 6-7.
Prequarterfinals in Classes B-1 and B-2 of the baseball tournament are slated Thursday. The rest of the action commences Friday. Finals in Classes A and B are June 3 at Pilot Field, with the C-D winners to be determined June 2 at Jamestown College Stadium.
Far West Regionals vs. Section IV are June 6, with the A and D winners hosting at College Stadium and the B and C champs traveling to Binghamton.
