Two people were killed and another was seriously injured early today in a head-on, two-car collision on Grand Island Boulevard in the Town of Tonawanda, police said.

Both drivers, Philip Bachelder, 49, of Irving, Calif., and Gerald Ouclair, 31, of 1461 Love Road in Grand Island, were killed when their cars collided at 12:25 a.m. just south of River Road, police said.

A passenger in the Ouclair car, Mary Eichler of North Tonawanda, was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital where she was listed today in critical condition.

Police said the accident occurred when Bachelder's rental car, traveling southbound on Grand Island Boulevard, crossed into the northbound lane and struck the Ouclair car head-on.

The force of the impact imprinted one car's license plate on the other car's bumper. "It was a pretty bad collision, and these people had to be extricated," with hydraulic tools, a Tonawanda police officer said today.

A Mercy Flight helicopter was sent to the scene in an attempt to save one of the drivers, but was waved off when the man was pronounced dead.

Police said an investigation of the accident is continuing.
