The head of the city Correction Officers Benevolent Association charges that to cut its sick-leave costs, the city Department of Correction tells pregnant women to have an abortion or face losing their jobs and harasses them if they refuse.

Six current or former female jail guards were present Tuesday at union president Phil Seelig's news conference to back up his charge.

However, Ruby Ryles, spokeswoman for the Correction Department, said that "Asking female correction officers to abort or resign is not nor has ever been a policy of this department."

She said the department head involved in the case has been reassigned.
