One of the most pressing problems faced by working parents is the struggle to find and pay for decent child care. Faced with very limited choices, many families are settling for inadequate and often dangerous child care. Nearly every day, another news story is reported documenting another tragic death or injury occurring in an unsafe child-care setting.
Here in Buffalo and across the country, parents, children's advocates and other community leaders have joined together to make child care safer and more affordable. We are supporting immediate passage of Act for Better Child Care (ABC), the most comprehensive child-care bill pending before Congress.
The ABC bill will help families with low or moderate incomes pay the cost of care, while improving the quality of care available to families at every income level. ABC will improve the child-care choices available to parents and ensure that children are safe.
Speaking up about the need to protect the health and safety of young children isn't just the "right" thing to do, it makes good economic sense as well. Our future prosperity depends on our children. Our children depend on what we adults do today. Adults can and must -- for the sake of our children -- make ABC a reality.
