Elgar, Pomp and Circumstance Marches Nos. 1-5, The Wand of Youth Suite No. 2, Three Bavarian Dances, English String Orchestra conducted by William Boughton (Nimbus CD NI 5136). This is something of a mongrel recording in the very admirable series by Boughton and the English String Orchestra, because the Pomp and Circumstance Marches are for huge orchestra and would seem more the province of the Philharmonia Orchestra, with which Boughton also records on Nimbus. Nonetheless, the greatly expanded ensemble sounds wonderful in the spacious acoustics of the Great Hall, University of Birmingham. The Wand of Youth and Bavarian Dances are also for enlarged orchestra but more in line with this series' original scope, and just beautifully played.
