Buffalo State men's basketball senior Lovell Smith earned All-East Region third team honors from D3Hoops.com. The McKinley High School product was named first team All-SUNYAC at guard after leading the Bengals in scoring at 19.9 points per game. Smith finished his career ranked eighth in school history with 1,303 points.

Former Canisius goaltender Charles Williams signed a standard player contract with the Manchester Monarchs, the East Coast Hockey League affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, the team announced Tuesday. Williams, 25, is a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the best player in college hockey, and a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the best goaltend…

A few months ago, somebody suggested tracking down people who had direct and indirect connections to the Duke-Kentucky epic in the 1992 NCAA Tournament East Region final. The greatest game in history ended with Christian Laettner taking a long pass from Grant Hill and hitting the winning shot at the buzzer. It was a natural story for Buffalo. Laettner grew up in Ango…

The game had all the atmosphere of the public library. Check that. Rochester's public library probably had more atmosphere than Blue Cross Arena did on Friday when Canisius and Robert Morris played in the semifinals of the Atlantic Hockey tournament. The official attendance was 200 and I'm guessing that included members of both bands. The other semifinal between Army We…

OK, so you didn’t survive the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament without your bracket getting blown to smithereens. You're drowning in regret while bracing for co-workers who can't wait to pounce and turn you into a punchline, the way they did last year with Mary from accounting. If you're looking for someone to rub your forehead and tell you everything is going to …

It's not easy to get an opportunity to play for a national championship. It's even more difficult to win a title ever year of your collegiate career. But that's how it played out for Julia Duquette. The North Tonawanda native scored shorthaded for Plattsburgh as the Cardinals won their fourth straight NCAA Division III women's hockey championship on Saturday. Plattsburg…

Western New York natives are part of two of the top four teams as the NCAA Men's Division I hockey tournament brackets were announced on Sunday afternoon. Alex Iafallo at Minnesota-Duluth and Sean Malone at Harvard will open up the final postseasons of their collegiate hockey careers as part of the top overall teams in the country. Iafallo (Eden) is the leading score…

Notre Dame forward V.J. Beachem scored 30 points against Syracuse in January and made seven three-pointers just a month ago at North Carolina State. Villanova's Kris Jenkins and Jalen Brunson went in the NCAA Tournament the second- and third-highest scorers on the country's best team. All of the above went cold, and their seasons ended Saturday afternoon in KeyBank C…

Moments after the most thrilling game of the NCAA Tournament, Nigel Hayes spoke in a low, impassive monotone. He sounded about as excited as a college kid who had just gotten back a C-plus on a term paper, or found out that his laundry was dry. "As you can tell by my demeanor, by my tone, I've been here before," Hayes said in the Wisconsin locker room Saturday afternoon…

Villanova coach Jay Wright had nothing to complain about Saturday after his team fell short in its bid to repeat as national champions. He watched Wisconsin stars Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig make big plays down the stretch of the Badgers’ 65-62 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. You win some, you lose some. “We’ve been on the other end of th…
