The annual MAAC basketball media revealed what the league's coaches think about the 2007-08 basketball season. So, for what it's worth:
On the men's side, Niagara was picked third behind Siena and Loyola -- both of which received five first-place votes. Canisius was picked ninth in the 10-team league ahead of Saint Peter's.
Seniors Charron Fisher and Tyrone Lewis of Niag…
Everyone expects Nebraska interim AD Tom Osborne to hire someone from the Cornhuskers family as the next football coach, a list that includes UB coach Turner Gill.
But according to former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer, that might not be the best thing for the program.
"You don’t try to recreate what’s happened in the past with the same people,'' he said Friday on XMS…
LEWISTON -- The University of Dayton band is in the house for tonight's Niagara men's hockey home opener against Bowling Green. You'll remember that the Dayton band adopted the Purple Eagles men's hoops team during their NCAA run last year. Niagara brought the band to campus to thank them and let the students know what all the fuss was about.

In March, Christian Laettner had two of his favorite worlds collide for a brief moment in time -- his alma mater Duke and his hometown Buffalo.
Laettner was in town when the Blue Devils played in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA men's basketball tournament at HSBC Arena -- and promptly lost their first game to Virginia Commonwealth, 79-77.

So far, no deal is in place for Mike Hopkins to succeed Jim Boeheim as coach at Syracuse when Jimmy B decides to retire according to the Syracuse Post-Standard. But it sounds like it's only a matter of time.
Look for Arizona to make a similar move and name assistant Kevin O'Neill the successor to Lute Olson.

First-year St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt must have some kind of recruiting touch to change Andrew Nicholson's mind.
Nicholson, a standout at Father Michael Goetz Secondary in Ontario who gave Bona a verbal commitment on Monday, seemed pretty certain back in March when he told the Toronto Star that he didn't want to attend college in America.

The University at Buffalo is an early 41/2-point underdog for Saturday's game against Syracuse University. That's not really a surprise considering UB has been favored only twice since 1999 - the 2006 season opener against Temple and last Saturday's game against Toledo.

The first BCS standings were released today and considering what happened last weekend with LSU and Cal losing, it's not a shock that Ohio State is No. 1. Traditional powers like Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida and USC are taking a back seat to teams like South Florida, Boston College, South Carolina, Kentucky and Arizona State.

You have to feel a bit of sympathy for Syracuse coach Greg Robinson, who fell to 1-6 this season after losing at home to Rutgers on Saturday. He's a good man but he can't seem to figure out how to turn around the Orange, who are now 6-24 under his watch.
After Saturday's loss, Robinson put some of the blame on himself.
“I’m seeing the same things happen and when I see th…
Might as well kick off the start to the college basketball season with a Top 10:

OLEAN -- It's an hour before the college basketball season officially begins at St Bonaventure and fans are already starting to file into the Reilly Center. The draw of course is Bob Lanier -- perhaps the most beloved basketball player in Bonnie history. Lanier is in Olean this weekend for kickoff festivities while Friday the Bob Lanier Court at the Reilly Center was…
Syracuse held its annual media day on Friday and here's what freshman point guard Jonny Flynn had to
On pressure on the freshman class:
“There’s always going to be pressure whenever you come in with as
much clout that we had, but us as freshman we have been through this
before, a lot of us played overseas, so I think we’re ready for this.
But like you said, Andy …
There could be a GC Ballers reunion at Syracuse if Riverside's Mike Williams is permitted
to join Paul Harris and Jonny Flynn on the Orange basketball team after the football season. According to this story by Donnie Webb in The Post Standard, Williams only needs an OK from football coach Greg Robinson.
First-year St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt received some bad news just days before the start of the season when he learned that freshman Da'Quan Cook
had not been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse and will forced to sit out the start of practice.
It's not clear how long Cook will be out, but he is one of eight newcomers Schmidt will attempt to work into the lineup.
Everyone has seen Mike Gundy's meltdown a few weeks back, but check out these two parodies from You Tube:
