Recap

The Williamsville North boys hockey team secured the Division 1 regular season title and the top seed in the Section VI playoffs with a 4-3 win over Lancaster at Buffalo State Sunday afternoon. North’s David O’Donoghue scored his second goal of the game with 1:33 left in the middle frame to break a 3-3 tie. Spartans goalie Reily Moyer made 27 saves in the win. “It’s nice to win a divisional championship, but now we start all over again,” Bob Rosen said. “It’s one-game elimination from here on out, so we have to be ready.” Andrew Bruno and Brett Sardina also had multiple points for the Spartans. Bruno’s three assists gives him 31, which ties the school and single-season Federation records for assists in a season set by Jake Rosen, North coach Bob Rosen’s son, in 2010-11. Bruno’s 42 points are the fifth most in a single season in Federation history. Sardina now sits at 25 goals, which is one shy of St. Joe’s Cole Schneider’s 26 from 2007-08. The Federation record for points in a season is 49, held by Jake Rosen and North teammate Scott Sims in 2010-11. The Spartans begin their state-title defense Saturday in the sectional quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m.
