The Buffalo News comments section is a tool for expressing views and exchanging ideas.
The burden is on the writers of comments to ensure that they are staying within our guidelines. The Buffalo News is under no obligation to allow comments that aren’t contributing to a healthy discourse or in any way demean the reputation of The Buffalo News or the work of its staff.
Comments should be on topic; respectful of other writers; not be libelous, obscene, threatening, abusive, or otherwise offensive; and generally be in good taste.
Anything in violation of these guidelines will be removed immediately. If you come across a comment that seems to be in poor taste or otherwise questionable, forward it to firstname.lastname@example.org for further review.
Users who repeatedly violate these guidelines will be banned.
If you notice a pattern of violations by a particular commenter (or a commenter whose username is itself offensive), send an e-mail to email@example.com noting the username and as many examples of violations as possible.
The following are reasons for a comment to be removed:
- Libelous, defamatory or based on hearsay
- Obscene or vulgar
- Threatening or abusive
- A personal attack: This includes personal attacks on the author of a story, the subject of a story or another commenter.
- Generally offensive
- Off topic
- Uses double entendre
If "Login" appears in the top right of the commenting section on your screen, you need to sign in. Click "Login" and select which account you would like to sign in with. The News' commenting system is operated by Disqus, which is separate from our subscriber log-in.
If you need to create an account, you can comment with a Twitter, Facebook or Google Plus account, or by signing up for a Disqus account.
Posting a comment
If your username appears in the top right of the commenting section on your screen, you are logged in and ready to post.
If your post is not appearing, the automated Disqus system has likely withheld your comment for a variety of reasons: inappropriate language, excessive capitalization and repetitive posting, among them.
If you feel your comment was inaccurately withheld by Disqus, email firstname.lastname@example.org with a request to review it, including your username, the full text of the comment and a link to the article you attempted to post it on.
Violations of user guidelines
You also will be unable to post a comment if you have been banned from the sytem for violating the user guidelines outlined above.
If you wish to appeal you ban, email email@example.com with your username.
