NASHVILLE -- Folks in the Music City hope history can be made here this June with the Nashville Predators winning their first Stanley Cup. But it's another June in Nashville, now nearly 15 years ago, that continues to have major impact on the NHL. It was here in 2003 that the most iconic entry draft in league history took place. It's incredible to go down the list of se…

Bisons and Baseball

TORONTO -- For openers, it could not have been a better start for Giancarlo Stanton with the New York Yankees. Two home runs to right-center field at the Rogers Centre totaling nearly 900 feet of air time. Seriously. Major statement made. The Yankees throttled the Blue Jays, 6-1, on Opening Day and easily the biggest talking point was about the booming bat that colle…

Bisons and Baseball

TORONTO — Get ready for a new name to adorn the home of the Buffalo Bisons after this season. The Coca-Cola Bottling Company is not renewing its naming rights deal on Coca-Cola Field and the city will be putting the name up for bid to determine the park's fifth moniker since it opened in 1988. "Beginning in 2019, the Bisons and Coca-Cola are excited to extend our lon…

Bisons and Baseball

TORONTO – In the hours leading to his debut as a big-league manager, Aaron Boone insisted he wasn't nervous. Even though he's now wearing the massive responsibility as the skipper of the New York Yankees. "I'm doing all right actually. Compared to being a player, I was more anxious at this moment as a player," Boone said Thursday afternoon in Rogers Centre, a couple hou…

Bisons and Baseball

As we head into Opening Day, with everyone getting a rare same-day start on Thursday, it's pretty easy to form a few groups and give every MLB team a label. There are winners and hopefuls and there's also the bloating, seedy underbelly of teams emboldened by the World Series victories of the Cubs and Astros and hoping to do the same via the draft. To them, 2018 is an end t…

Bisons and Baseball

The Yankees are back to being the Yankees again and might have more bash in their lineup than any time since the days of Mantle and Maris. The Red Sox still look like the Red Sox. The Astros are the defending World Series champions. Seriously. The Indians might win 100 games again. The Twins were a revelation last season and the Angels have too much talent to keep under…

Bisons and Baseball

Ben Wagner has watched hundreds of players get the call to the major leagues over his 11 seasons as the play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Bisons. Now he's the one getting the call. Wagner was named the new radio voice of the parent Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday. “It is a dream come true, and a lot of years in the making,” said Wagner. Wagner, 37, will be replacing …

In another difficult season for the Buffalo Sabres, veteran winger Kyle Okposo's daily presence is a reminder that players can't take their time in the game for granted. Okposo, who landed in the neuro ICU unit of Buffalo General Medical Center last year after a serious reaction to concussion medication, is a nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Okposo was se…

TORONTO – This has been a rough few months for Jason Botterill. He finally got to puff out his chest for a few minutes Monday evening. I actually saw him have multiple reasons to smile, too. Good for him. He deserved the moment. Botterill's dream of becoming an NHL general manager has been mostly a nightmare in his first season for the Buffalo Sabres. The first team he'…

Starting tonight, only seven more left over the final two weeks to mercifully end another lost season…

TORONTO – News of Casey Mittelstadt agreeing to terms on his entry-level contract spread just as the Buffalo Sabres were wrapping up their morning skate in Air Canada Centre for Monday night's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Some players in the dressing room actually heard about it for the first time from reporters giving them the word. The response was unanimous:…

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Probably the last place the Buffalo Sabres need to be Monday night is the Air Canada Centre. At one of the lowest points in their season, when they once again can't put the puck in the ocean if they were given a free shot from the beach, the Sabres will meet the Toronto Maple Leafs in a game where plenty of history can be made for the NHL's resurgent O…
