Four months ago, Phil Housley was an assistant coach as the Nashville Predators were in the Stanley Cup final. Now he's a first-year head coach of the Buffalo Sabres, a team that hasn't won a playoff series in 10 1/2 years and hasn't even played in one since 2011. The weight of that history is heavy as the Sabres went 3-7-2 in October with a roster that includes several…

Memo to the Houston Astros: If you make the World Series again and Brian Duff walks through the gates of Minute Maid Park, expect a long night. Duff, the Sabres' host on MSG telecasts, is a diehard Astros fan from his days of idolizing Nolan Ryan. He attended Game Three of the 2005 Series, the Astros' 7-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox in 14 innings that took 5 hours, 47…

The Sabres haven't played since Saturday's 3-2 loss to San Jose. They don't play again until Thursday night in Arizona. So the long break gave coach Phil Housley a chance to drive the club during practice Tuesday in HarborCenter. Housley opted against a training-camp style review of his team's objectives on the ice within a game. Instead, he pushed hard for 70 minutes o…

The countdown clock for the start of the World Junior Championships is under two months, and the 2017-18 version of the tournament that starts the day after Christmas is going to look quite a bit different than the 2010-11 event that played to strong reviews here seven years ago. On the ice, one big difference is that lesser-profile games in pool play as well as contest…

The Sabres have sent defenseman Zach Redmond back to Rochester, ostensibly clearing the way for Justin Falk to return to the lineup Thursday in Arizona. Coach Phil Housley said last week that Falk, who has yet to play this season, was close to returning. He practiced with the team at the end of last week and will likely be on the ice when the club hits the practice ice …

The New York Rangers have been one of the biggest disappointments in the NHL thus far, with a 3-7-2 record that's exactly the same as the Sabres. The Blueshirts are coming off three straight 100-point seasons under Alain Vigneault, and those followed his 96-point campaign in 2013-14 that led to the Rangers getting all the way to the Stanley Cup final before they lost to Lo…

A wrist injury suffered just prior to Anaheim Ducks training camp had left Ryan Miller on the sidelines for most of the first month of the season, unable to contribute to his new team. Miller finally got his chance Sunday in Carolina and made the most of his opportunity to give starter John Gibson a breather. Miller made 34 saves -- including all nine shots he faced …

The first month of the schedule is gone. And just like so many others in recent years, it's a bad one in the standings for the Buffalo Sabres. Saturday's 3-2 loss to San Jose dropped the Sabres to 3-7-2. They are seventh out of eight teams in the Atlantic Division, 15th out of 16 in the Eastern Conference and 28th out of 31 overall. The roll call of former Bisons connections managing in the big leagues has been cut by two this month with the essentially forced retirement of Terry Collins in New York and the dismissal of John Farrell in Boston. But a new name has surfaced as a potential leading candidate to join the group that now numbers five skippers. Ex-Buffalo catcher Dusty Wathan, the clubho…

Even though the New York Yankees won 91 games and got within one victory of the World Series, it still seemed like it might be time for Joe Girardi to go. On the surface, it was a stunner when word came out of the Bronx Thursday morning that Girardi is gone. The Yankees have decided not to offer him a new contract and are moving on after 10 seasons. The surprisingly …

A lot was expected from Victor Antipin. When you're signing a free agent from the KHL, this isn't like drafting an 18-year-old or waiting on a big prospect like Brendan Guhle to develop on defense. The word first came out back in March when the Sabres were in San Jose that former General Manager Tim Murray had just about locked up Antipin. It wasn't until the World Cham…

You wonder if the NHL and NBC have buyer's remorse on the Winter Classic right about now. The Rangers and the Sabres will be bringing a New York State of Mind to New Year's Day in Citi Field, but will anyone care to watch them by Jan. 1? Both teams entered their games Saturday 1-5-2 (and then both won). The Sabres had been outscored, 32-20, and the Rangers by 30-20. The…
