On the surface, it felt as if the practice fell apart at the seams. But upon closer examination, the emotional altercation during a five-on-five drill may be just what the Buffalo Sabres need. If nothing else, it shows while the team is in last place in the Eastern Conference, there's still a pulse to the roster. A shoving and shouting match between Evander Kane and …

It was just his fourth career NHL game and an inauspicious start for Brendan Guhle. The defenseman took a hooking penalty just 4:47 into the game. Not the best start, especially when facing the second-best power play in the league. There are things Casey Mittelstadt would like back. Like that three-on-zero break against Sweden in the semifinal, where he didn't bury his scoring chance, a goal that would tied the game and perhaps changed the course of the tournament for Team USA. But overall, Mittelstadt is happy with his game, content with the bronze medal, and leaves his mark on the World Junio…

The coaching staff took a variety of different tactics to rally Team USA on Friday. After all, no one really wants to be in this game, the bronze medal game, the consolation prize of the World Junior Championship. In the moment, bronze seems like something to settle for. Years later, it can become the most prized possession. That's what assistant coach Greg Brown …

Marcus Davidsson remembers where he was in 2012, the last time Sweden won the gold medal at the World Junior Championship. He was home, watching the game on television, of course. Along with the rest of the country. Because that's what Sweden does. Now Davidsson, a second-round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres, will get to play for gold after Sweden defeated the Unit…

When he opened the scoring for the United States in Tuesday's quarterfinal, the celebration took Kieffer Bellows into the glass, right where a fan was turned to highlight his attire — a Minnesota North Stars jersey bearing the name "Bellows." Kieffer saw the jersey, but he didn't realize until later it was one of his cousins wearing his dad's old jersey. That's how d…
