Letter: How about a reunion for University Games?

How about a reunion for University Games?

This event attracted 7,000 athletes from 137 countries. It opened at Rich Stadium before a crowd of 70,000 spectators and continued for 11 days at various venues throughout WNY. My 11-year-old son and I were volunteers and attended both the opening and closing ceremonies, which included a musical presentation by Natalie Cole, daughter of Nat King Cole. We followed various events following the exploits of players from Slovakia, the home of my paternal grandparents. I still have my T-shirt, badge and pins from various sites of previous games and current attendee countries including New Zealand, Portugal and Russia.

The Flickinger Aquatic Center in downtown was newly constructed for this event and was home to numerous aquatic events. I recall attending a family cookout with a fellow volunteer and his family and how the Slovakian athletes attending were excited to receive Beatles records.

I would hope that someone would sponsor a reunion for volunteers and staff, thus offering an opportunity to reminisce over the events of 1993.
