A young black bear was spotted Thursday night in the Rogers Road area in Hamburg, according to police.
Bear sightings "aren't unheard of" in Hamburg, police said in a Facebook post.
Police advised the bear sightings aren't necessarily emergencies, in and of themselves. Residents should keep their distance if they see a bear. Bears tend to avoid human activity, police said.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation says "simple sanitation measures" can help avoid attracting bears, including removing bird feeders after April 1, keeping garbage in sealed cans and removing grease from grills after every use. The DEC has tips for avoiding bears here.
Police did not specify where in the area of Rogers Road the bear was seen.
