A State University at Binghamton student died after he was stabbed on campus, university officials said on the university's Facebook page.
"We are sad to report that a student has died due to a stabbing on campus that occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15," the Monday morning post read.
The victim was identified Joao Souza, a 19-year-old freshman engineering student. University officials said the student's family has been notified and has requested privacy.
The incident "does not appear to be a random act," officials said.
The suspected assailant remained at large. He was described in the Facebook post "as a light-skinned male wearing dark pants and a dark, Puma hooded sweatshirt."
Several people have been interviewed overnight by investigators from multiple agencies, university officials said.
All Monday classes have been canceled.
University police asked anyone with information to call 607-777-2393.
