BURKE, Rita A. (Szelewicki)

BURKE - Rita A. (nee Szelewicki)
November 12, 1925 - April 9, 2018 Rita Burke passed away in her Amherst home at the age of 92, with her adoring family at her side. Born and raised in south Buffalo, she married the love of her life, Howard Burke and moved to Eggertsville in 1950 to raise seven children. While her husband of 57 years, Howard, was known to many, Rita was a homebody who was tirelessly devoted to taking care of her family. She took great pride in her family, regularly attending their school concerts and sporting events. She herself was devoted to fitness, rarely missing her daily workout. She even walked to her job at a medical billing company. Because Rita preferred the quiet, stay-at-home lifestyle, few people outside of her family got the chance to truly know her. For her family members, it was a different story. There was never a day when there wasn't some type of homemade baked good at her home. Living in the Burke household meant you would develop a sweet tooth and love of great meals. Rita would take vacation prior to the holidays to make her famous cookies for family and special friends. Those who were fortunate enough to receive a box of her cookies realized the love she had for others. Rita was a very giving person, never asking anything in return. Her remarkable work ethic and giving nature can be seen in all of her children. The manner in which she demonstrated her love by feeding others was passed through to the next generation of Burkes. Rita is survived by her children, Mary Margaret (late Dr. Andrew) Gage, Ken Burke, Rosie Ripley, Paul (Mary Kay) Burke, Susan (Glenn) Nelson, Raymond (Brenda) Burke, David (Kim) Burke, seventeen loving grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, her brother Richard (Patricia) Szelewicki and numerous nieces and nephews. Rita's life was celebrated in the way it was lived, quietly and privately with her family. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family respectfully asks that you make somebody's day by giving them the tastiest baked good you can find. No prior visitation. All services will be held privately by the family. Arrangements by AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC. (716-836-6500). Please share condolences at www.AMIGONE.com
